Взаимодействие христиан IV-VIII вв. с водой было тесно связано с практикой паломничества: нагруженные библейскими ассоциациями источники несли функцию сакрализации Святых Мест, связывая события Писания с окружавшими паломников пейзажами. В статье проанализирована система водных сооружений монастыря Ритория (V-VII вв.), возведенного недалеко от Иордана на холме Тель-эль- Харрар, почитавшемся как место расположения пещеры и источника, где крестил Иоанн Предтеча. Эта система включала бассейн-цистерну, акведук и ряд купелей. Показано, как архитектура организовывала движение через ансамбль, трансформируя взаимодействие паломников с водой от практического к культовому. Центральным архитектурным и смысловым образом выступала апсида Западной церкви монастыря, устроенная в скальном гроте. Ее устройство обнаруживает перформативный характер, предполагавший наличие льющейся воды, уходившей по каналу под полом в сторону близлежащей долины. Эта водная конструкция, подчеркивающая ассоциацию апсиды с пещерой Крестителя, согласуется со свидетельствами Иоанна Мосха, Епифания Монаха и игумена Даниила. Проведенный анализ демонстрирует, что через совмещение архитектурной и естественной природной формы апсида-грот служила мостом между церковным пространством и окружающим пейзажем, придавая ему сакральный библейский статус.
